REVOLUTIONARY &
THE EDEN HOTEL
Rosa Luxemburg
Charles began working with Emilie Hetland (writer and lead artist of Volya Theatre) in 2016 on a project about revolutionary feminist and Communist Alexandra Kollontai. The project was created in reaction to how radical women have been written out of history and a desire to make work that was physical, imaginative and biographical. ‘REVOLUTIONARY’ tells the story of the Russian Revolution and Alexandra Kollontai's rebellion against the tsar, her husband, parents, Lenin, Stalin and above all - the bourgeoisie.
‘REVOLUTIONARY’ premiered at the Stavanger Konserthus in 2023. Volya theare, Emilie and Charles are now in the process of developing a new piece ‘The Eden Hotel’ about Rosa Luxemburg, German revolutionary and feminist, directed by Katie O'Halloran. The play follows the events of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht's murders at the Eden Hotel in 1919 Berlin. The show explores their politics, personal lives and the brutality they suffered on January 15, 1919 through a Weimar Republic cabaret and silent film-inspired style.
