“We hope the work will draw the audience into the complexity of psychological domestic abuse in order to challenge misconceptions, spread information and help combat the issue.”

Rosie Race

Us Against The World, a new play from Rosie Race premiered at The Drum, Plymouth Theatre Royal in 2024. Charles joined the production for it’s premier to play ‘Him’ in Race’s double hander that explores the often-hidden and widely misunderstood topic of coercive control, the slippery slope between care and abuse, and the colossal strength it can take to break free from an outwardly-idyllic relationship.

Us Against the world merges movement-theatre, sharp dialogue, and poetic imagery in an absurdist and darkly funny way. The play is now being developed and booked for future touring 2025/26.

“Tight writing and convincing performances reveal a couple – Charles Sandford and Race herself – shacking up, making in-jokes, building a life. That eventually, horribly, slowly crushes her”
